Juneteenth is the nation’s newest federal holiday, celebrated on June 19th, the date in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the last enslaved Black Americans were free.

As Americans make plans for the holiday — which many people celebrate by attending festivals and BBQs, or by doing community service — many are wondering which businesses will remain open and which will close their doors for the day.

That question is especially important for coffee drinkers who start their mornings with a Starbucks run.

The good news for caffeine lovers is that most Starbucks locations remain open on Juneteenth, although store hours can vary by location.

Because Starbucks is a private company rather than a government agency or financial institution, it is not required to close for federal holidays. Many stores continue operating on their normal schedules, while some locations may adjust their hours based on staffing needs, customer demand or local considerations.

Why do some businesses close on Juneteenth?

The Juneteenth announcement came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

It became a federal holiday in 2021 after Congress passed legislation and the bill was signed into law by President Joe Biden. Since then, federal offices, the U.S. Postal Service, banks and stock exchanges have observed the holiday.

Private businesses, however, generally decide for themselves whether to close, reduce hours or continue normal operations.

Will all Starbucks locations be open on Juneteenth?

While the vast majority of Starbucks stores remain open on federal holidays, operating hours can differ from one location to another. The best way to learn about your local store hours is to check the Starbucks store locator.

Company-operated stores may have modified schedules, and licensed Starbucks locations inside grocery stores, airports, hotels, universities, and retail chains often follow the operating hours of the host business.

For example, a Starbucks inside a Target, Kroger, or airport terminal may have different holiday hours than a standalone Starbucks café.

Mobile ordering, rewards redemptions and digital payments typically remain available at participating stores that are open during the holiday.

Many major retailers and restaurant chains remain open on Juneteenth, including grocery stores, big-box retailers, convenience stores and fast-food restaurants.

However, banks generally close because Juneteenth is a federal holiday. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are also closed, and the U.S. Postal Service does not deliver regular mail.

Services like FedEx, UPS, and DHL are likely to keep their regular delivery schedules, even on Juneteenth.
